Interventionists In Atlanta
Having an addict or alcoholic in the family is a painful thing. There’s all the broken promises, outright lies and tears turned to anger. Addiction is traumatic for the entire family. That’s why you need someone to talk to. Someone who understands. Someone who can offer hope. That’s why there’s Pathfinders Interventions.
For more than 20 years, our interventionists in Atlanta have been working with families to help them face addiction. Many people tell you that an addict has to hit “rock bottom” before he or she starts to get better, but that isn’t always the case. It’s a fact that once the family begins to address certain behaviors, the addict has to face the consequences of his or her behavior. This where the addict begins to feel the pain of addiction which creates motivation to change.
All Interventions Are Not All The Same
It’s sad but many people tell us that their loved one has gone through treatment before. Some have gone to treatment multiple times, but the fact is, many addicts have to go through multiple treatment experiences before he or she begins to get better.
But traditional interventions don’t take this into account. The traditional interventional model involves meeting with an interventionist beforehand, preparing letters and surprising the addict and hopefully, taking him or her to treatment. There are problems with this type of intervention however.
First, no addict likes surprises. They don’t typically react will to be surprised by their loved ones asking them to give up their primary emotional coping skill..or else. Typically, there’s a consequence to not going to treatment, so there’s clearly a blackmail component to the traditional model of intervention. Even if the addict agrees to go to treatment, he or she tends to go like a prisoner goes to prison rather than with willingness to make major life changes. The motivation is simply not there with the “surprise party” style of interventions.
Also, with the traditional intervention, the focus is almost entirely on the addict. This single minded focus reenforces the idea that the addict is the family. While it never helps to blame people for the presence of addiction in the family, clearly, the addict is not the only person in the family that needs help. After years of enduring the pain of watching a loved one self-destruct, the rest of the family needs help too.
Interventionist With A More Effective Approach
At Pathfinders Interventions, we use a more comprehensive approach to interventions. We have some solid believes about addiction like:
- Since addiction hurts the entire family, interventions should focus on the entire family.
- The family is the most powerful motivating force in our lives
- If one person is going to get better, everyone needs to start getting better
Our interventionists provide information on addiction to the family and outline other ways that addiction has manifested in the family. From there, we begin to outline a plan for the family to start healing. Of course, no plan is successful without a level of accountability, so we help your family begin to establish that as well.
If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, call and talk to one of the interventionists at Pathfinders Interventions. We look forward to helping your family today. CallĀ 770.569.3801.
