Drug And Alcohol Interventions
Do you know someone who has been abusing substances and needs a drug and alcohol intervention badly? Chances are, if you do, you’ve been terribly hurt by that person. It’s a cycle of pain that just seems to have no end. Now, there’s hope. Pathfinders interventionists can help.
Most people think of an intervention as a bad “surprise party” that leads to a painful confrontation with little chance of success. It doesn’t have to be that way. Traditional interventions require considerable planning, several meetings or discussions with the interventionist, dishonesty, secrecy and can be emotionally traumatic for all involved. At Pathfinders, our interventionists use a different approach. It’s more of an educational process that requires one phone call, no planning, no secrecy has a better outcome because we’re not just focusing on one person.
The single minded goal of a traditional drug and alcohol intervention is to get the “target” of the intervention into treatment immediately or the intervention fails. This isn’t our approach at all. No one becomes addicted overnight. Our approach is to engage the entire family system in a healing process. Helping the entire family identify what needs to change and a plan of action for making that happens yields a better outcome for all involved.
The outcomes for this type of drug and alcohol intervention tend to be higher as well. The reason is simple. When you “target” the addict or alcoholic, the family tends to see this as his or her issue. If and when that person goes off to treatment and comes back into the same system, what do you imagine the recovery rate is? When the system gets healthier, the addict has a better chance of staying sober in a healthier system. It’s that simple. No blame- only personal responsibility for everyone in that system.
Often, people get defensive and ask, “I didn’t do anything to deserve his/her addiction! What do I need to do to change?” Simple. Your challenge is to deal with your trauma and possibly your enabling or codependency. Once that occurs, the family system improves.
At Pathfinders Interventions, we use more of an educational approach to helping families learn about addiction and recovery. We work toward helping everyone identify what recovery will look like for them.
